Hiking Trails

We offer numerous wooded trails that run through or near the City of Thorold. Explore and enjoy the more traveled ones for hiking and mountain biking, which include the nearby famous Bruce Trail and Short Hills Provincial Park.
The Welland Canal Parkway Trail is a multi-use, paved trail perfect for touring on a bike. This trail runs parallel to the Welland Canal and stretches 42 km from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. It is part of a network of trails that form the larger Trans-Canada Trail Link and the popular Greater Niagara Circle Route. The Welland Canal Parkway Trail is also linked by the Waterfront Trail in St. Catharines. This picturesque trail follows Lake Ontario's shoreline with Toronto's skyline in the distance. During the summertime, many residents take advantage of the private little beaches along the journey.
Don't forget to try the multi-use, paved Friendship Trail in Port Colborne, along Lake Erie's shoreline, which eventually hooks up with the Niagara River Parkway Trail. During the winter, many residents cross-country ski and/or snowshoe along this route. While exploring the Niagara River Parkway Trail, take your bike across the Welland Canal on the adorable Bridge-it Ferry in Port Robinson.

The City of Thorold is situated on treaty land. This land is steeped in the rich history of the First Nations such as the Hatiwendaronk (Hat-i-wen-DA-ronk), the Haudenosaunee (Hoe-den-no-SHOW-nee), and the Anishinaabe (Ah-nish-ih-NAH-bey), including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. There are many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people from across Turtle Island that live and work in Niagara today. The City of Thorold stands with all Indigenous people, past and present, in promoting the wise stewardship of the lands on which we live.
