Community Arenas

Now over 50 years old, the Frank Doherty Arena has been upgraded with a state-of-the-art ice-making machine. This facility features one NHL-sized arena, which is popular with the Thorold community during the winter season, offering space for hockey tournaments, figure skating shows, and public skating.

Canada Games Park is a state-of-the-art, multi-use, multi-generational sport and recreation facility that will continue to be a lasting legacy from the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games. This facility hosts local, national, and international sporting events, bringing athletes and fans from other areas to the Thorold community.

This facility includes the Walker Sports and Abilities Centre, consisting of two NHL-sized ice rinks offering public skating and space for hockey tournaments in season. It also includes a suspended 200-meter indoor track available to the public for free and four gymnasiums that can be rented for team sports. Outside the Centre are six beach volleyball courts, a cycling pavilion, and a 400-meter track-and-field facility, which are used by the Brock University student population and the Thorold community.

The City of Thorold is situated on treaty land. This land is steeped in the rich history of the First Nations such as the Hatiwendaronk (Hat-i-wen-DA-ronk), the Haudenosaunee (Hoe-den-no-SHOW-nee), and the Anishinaabe (Ah-nish-ih-NAH-bey), including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. There are many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people from across Turtle Island that live and work in Niagara today. The City of Thorold stands with all Indigenous people, past and present, in promoting the wise stewardship of the lands on which we live.
